Question: Bolens Rider Mower

tbroder55

once the 9/16 bolt is removed does it come straight off? or is it screwed in the steering shaft?
WJA
Reply: Bolens Rider Mower

WJA

Hello tbroder55,

By looking at the 738-0919A steering shaft. It is a serrated shaft at the end where the 631-04028 steering wheel is located. So I would say the the wheel would pull right off.

Question: Gear On The Steering Shaft

rgreene

Can the gear on the end of the steering shaft be replaced without replacing the whole shaft?
If so where can I purchase the gear?

Hello rgreene,

The complete 738-0919A Steering Shaft will have to be ordered in order to get the gear at the end.

Hope this helps,

Question: Starting Problems

SBYSTEPH

cannot seem to keep a battery charged enough to start more than two cuts in a row now new battery and won't crank over and smoke coming from I assume starter wires on right side of engine. now will not crank at all and will not start with grounding "jump" to starter

I had a similar problem. It wasn't the battery or starter. The valves needed adjusting. This made it easier for the engine to spin and breath. I goggled it to learn how. Hope this helps.

Question: WON

JAMES GASSAWAY

I HAD IT IN SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE--I WANTED A NEW STARTER PUT ON BUT THEY SAID ALL THAT WAS NEEDED WAS WIRING POST CLEANED. NOW IT'S BACK TO NOT STARTING AGAIN -- THE ENGINE WILL MAKE 1 FIRE, IF I KEEP TURNING THE KEY IT WILL ROTATE SLOWLY UNTIL IT WILL FIRE 1 TIME AGAIN. AFTER A WHILE, THE BENDIX WILL START WHIRRING UNTIL IT COOLS DOWN.

Before you tear into the transmission, check to see if the break is releasing.

Question: Transmission Slip

Clyde Massey

I have a 2003 Bolens riding mower. Until about a year ago, I had no issues. Since that time I have replaced the belts several times. The one from the motor to the variable speed pulley the most. I replaced the variable speed pulley with a newer one and no difference after a short while. Any help is appreciated.
Andy
Question: Starts, Then Stops

Andy

My mower runs well until it warms up, then it stops like it has no spark. (like some ghost turned the key off) If I let it sit a while, then it runs again until it gets warm. Where is the B & S engine model #? I think the ignition module went bad, what do you think?
henry
Reply: Starts, Then Stops

henry

Sounds like a weak coil. When it cuts off have you checked for fire going to the spark plug? If not, pull the plug wire off the spark plug. Hold it close to a good ground by holding the insulated part of the plug wire and have someone try to start it.
You are looking to see if you have a spark going from the plug wire to ground.
If you don`t, you have a bad coil. When it cools down, check for spark again.
Also check the coil wire for a frayed spot, or a worn spot. Check the small wire attached to the coil also.

my bolens would start by putting gas down the carb, but would not stay running. I took the float out of the fuel bowl and know it always starts up.
Tommy Brown
Question: Belt

Tommy Brown

The mower does not pull. The bottom drive belt from the motor to the rear is so lose while engaged in forward gear you can pull the belt together and touch itself. How tight does the belt have to be and where do you adjust at? Thanks.
calvin winn
Reply: Belt

calvin winn

There is no adjustment on the drive belt. There is a standard size for your mower, with a variable speed pulley. See if the pulley is frozen in place.
Roy697
Reply: Belt

Roy697

There is an adjustment, but the belt, like mine is probably worn. My belts are warn to the point that the pulley was touching the side of the body, no more traveling, I cut a hole after removing the wheel, real easy, that let it travel farther. Now there is an adjustment on the rod that goes from the gear selector to the pulley bar, I have adjusted mine so I could use the belts farther than factory. You need to remove the cover that is over the shifter, then you can see, but the threaded part your looking for is on the bottom of the pulley bar.
Hope this helps

In the picture B look at parts B-33 & B-62

Again the bar that the pulley is mounted to what hitting or against the body so I cut it out with a cutoff wheel in a small grinder. I pushed in the the clutch & put it in park to give me clearance so I didn't do damage to the pulley.

Underneath the panel where the transmission shift arm comes out there is a fuse connector. Check to see if fuse is good. Hope this helps.

I`m assuming your saying when you turn the key to start the engine, nothing happens. If so you may have a safety interlock problem.I had the same problem. Try pulling back hard on the lever that engages the cutting blades and hold it tight and turn the key to start the engine at the same time. If it does not start
you probably have another bad safety switch. Hope it works for you.

Check the wiring harness next to the right side of the motor. The connection can break and separate, thereby creating a gap in the wires. This will not let current flow. This is what happened with mine anyway. I just strapped the connector together. It works fine now.
My mower runs and cuts well, when it runs. Bad design in the B & S motor carb. Needle valve seat not replaceable. Lets gas flow past when worn, filling engine case w/ gas in short order. Then, after you change the oil and drain all the gas out of the cylinder, it's either replace the carb (really expensive) or install a fuel shut-off valve. Worst, is that the steering design is really poor. I've replaced the steering shaft twice so far. The pinion gear on the bottom of the shaft just doesn't mate well w/ the arc gear on the steering arm thingy, mostly due to weak bushing/support at bottom of the steering shaft.
My mower is a 2003 rider. I have cut grass 3 feet tall with this mower and it has never stop cutting good. I have had John Deere, Murray, White, and they do not hold a candle to this mower.
