Brush Cutters

Application:

Brush cutters are heavy duty, high powered trimmers that often use blades and other attachments for clearing very dense brush. Because they are larger, heavier, and more expensive the regular string trimmers, brush cutters are typically for professional applications.

Because of their weight, brush cutters are usually fitted with bicycle style handlebars (or a shoulder strap/grip bar combination) and include rather extensive harnesses for better weight distribution, control, and to for decreasing user fatigue.

Because they require high power, brush cutters are exclusively gas-powered, and are available in 2-stroke and 4-stroke variations.

Brush Cutters are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • 2-stroke
  • 4-stroke

Probably no introduction needed here. Cutting, trimming, felling. Any time one piece of timber needs to be two, a chainsaw is a straight-forward way to go about it, to say the least.

Chainsaws on the market are available in sizes and power levels to match every job. Gasoline versus electric is the major distinction between chainsaw types, but from there, bar nose length, power output, and a host of features are still left to be considered.

Because chainsaws are especially dangerous, Chainsaw Safety Guidelines should be followed strictly. Also, view our Chainsaw Chains article for tips on measuring and matching chainsaw chain replacements.   Chainsaws are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Electric (Corded and Cordless)

Chippers Application:

These also go by "shredders," "chipper/shredders," "wood chippers," "brush shredders," and "tree chippers." Great for making compost, sawdust, or mulch out of pretty much any kind of yard waste.

Like most other tools and machines, workload is usually the determining factor for chippers. In fact, it's best to start out as thinking of wood chippers in two categories: big and small. Smaller chippers can be electric or gas powered, and are great for the average homeowner.

Larger chippers and chipper/shredders are gas powered. These machines handle large branches and big material easily. Wood Chippers are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Power hedge trimmers (or clippers) move their blades in a fast, back-and-forth action to groom hedges and bushes. Hedge trimmers are available in gasoline, electric, cordless, single-sided blade, and double-sided blade models.

The power of the hedge clippers increases from electric to gas models, but gas models are almost exclusively available in 2-stroke designs that require a gasoline/oil mixture.

A number of design feature choices come in tow with a hedge trimmer purchase decision. "Double position" trimmers allow users to adjust the tool for 90 degree cuts, and "lock on" features make long lasting jobs easier. Anti-vibration features are important for almost any hedge trimmer purchase.
Power hedge trimmers are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Gas
  • Electric
  • Cordless
  • Single-Sided Blades
  • Double-Sided Blades

Lawn Tractors   Application:

Lawn tractors, or riding lawn mowers, are like the monster trucks of lawn care. Because they're more expensive than push mowers, and because of the extra maintenance involved, lawn tractors are best for really big jobs.

Shopping for a lawn tractor is a lot like choosing a car, since shoppers can decide between automatic/manual transmission, speed, cruise control, horsepower, warranty, push-button start, and even cup holders.

For big issues like horsepower and speed, the acreage of the job is a good yardstick for narrowing options down. Average horsepower range for lawn tractors is about 17hp to 21hp. Bigger tractors are often called "garden tractors," and come in the 22hp to 28hp range.   Lawn tractors are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Automatic/Manual
  • 4-Wheel Steering
  • Horsepower/Speed
Major features:
  • Warranty
  • Mulching kits
  • Tiller attachment
  • Dozer blade
  • Shade
  • Cup holders
  • Electric push-button start
  • Electric turn-off switch
  • Cruise control

Line Trimmers   Application:

Line trimmers also go by "string trimmers," and "lawn trimmers." Line trimmers use a spinning blade/string and carry system that allows for grooming and trimming in hard-to-get-to areas other tools can't reach.

Power supply, line feed design, and shaft design separate the major types of trimmers. A wide variety of features adapts each trimmer to a user's needs, even "combi" trimmers that include attachments for hedging and edging.

Log Splitters   Application:

Yep, log splitters split logs, and, naturally, also go by the name "wood splitters." Splitter engines drive a wedge-shaped ram to split logs, but despite their simple name and operation, log splitters are a rather complicated type of outdoor machine, like lawn tractors.

Major considerations for log splitter purchases include: power source, horsepower, RPM's, RAM power (in tons), cylinder size, log length capacity, log diameter capacity, horizontal splitting, verticle splitting, and hydraulic splitting.

Although expensive, log splitters will do the work of many people, making big jobs easy.

Log splitters are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Gas
  • Electric
  • Horizontal
  • Verticle
  • Hydraulic
  • Wheeled

Mowers   Application:

When a lawn is not big enough to require a tractor mower, all that horizontal cutting gets done by walk-behind lawn mowers. Like many other lawn and garden tools and machines, walk-behind mowers can be powered by gasoline, electricity, and portable batteries.

It seems that the bigger the machine gets, the more factors and features need to be considered when shopping. Mowers can be push-behind or self-propelled, and include options to take care of all those grass clippings, like mulching, side-discharge, and bagging.

Horsepower, cutting width, and many other features come together to fit a mower to its user and application.

Mowers are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Gas (mostly 4-stroke for new mowers)
  • Electric
  • Cordless
  • Mulching
  • Bagging
  • Side-Discharge

[Back to top]   Pruning Saws   Application:

Also going by the names "pole pruners," and "pole saws," power pruning saws are essentially small chainsaws mounted at the working end of a strong pole, used for pruning and trimming branches high up in trees. Pruning saws usually have a reach of about 12 feet, and come in the typical power options of gas (2-stroke), electric, and cordless electric.

Power options and engine power are determined by the thickness of branches being cut. Other options include telescopic pruners for greater reach.
Pruning saws are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Gas (2-stroke)
  • Electric
  • Cordless
Major features:

Tillers/Cultivators
  Application:

Other names include "garden tillers," and "rototillers." Tillers are best power tools for turning up soil before planting begins, which they do with the use of turning "tines" (cultivating blades).

Front-line tillers (sometimes called mini-cultivators) are typically pushed, and are great for smaller gardening projects. Their tines (blades) are mounted in the front of the machine. Tines are mounted behind the wheels of rear-line tillers, giving them extra power to turn hard soil. Rear-line tillers are usually self-propelled.

For even heavier-duty work, some tillers are designed with counter rotating tines.
Tillers are available in combinations of the following major types and features:

Major types:

  • Front-Line
  • Rear-Line
  • Gas (2- and 4-stroke)
  • Electric
  • Cordless
