Steering was loose and skipped teeth at times
Removed the gas tank for working space, then removed the dash and the shaft retainer to remove the steering wheel and shaft.
Replaced the gear and bushings and added the support plate that my early model did not have. This removed the play in the gear and allowed the steering shaft the fit tightly removing the looseness in the steering ,when it was reassembled, it was better than new.

Troy Bilt Super Bronco would not steer
Removed nut from bottom of steering rod, removed steering pinion gear. removed bracket from gas tank and moved it back out of the way, without disconnecting the lines, placed new bushing, steel this time instead of original plastic, in the slot for it; then I repositioned steering rod thru hole in bushing, installed steering pinion gear, washer and nut, and tightened until snug, and then set the gas tank back into place and secured it. It worked and the lawn tractor once again can be steered.
