Question: Troy-bilt TB144 Cultivator
How to remove old recoil starter and replace with new one?
Reply: Troy-bilt TB144 Cultivator
Hi wrodneyhall I see that of issue to you is removing the starter recoil housing on this unit. You may or may not have noted Torx head screws are the fasteners that are commonly used on these machines.
I am sure you need to remove the clutch drum and clutch assembly which are ahead of the starter housing on the machine. I would like to refer you to that process done on a VERY similar Ryobi weedtrimmer.
Go to the home page. Click on the Repair center. On the right, you will see some available videos. Click on the second row of videos titled " Lawn Equipment Parts". Find the video or tutorial "Removing The Clutch On A Trimmer."
Question: Troy Bilt Tb144 Problem
I cannot start my tb 144 cultivator/tiller. I have replaced the spark plug but so far that is all I have done.
after I depress the primer bulb a few times it no longer pops up, it just stays compressed and I am wondering if this might be the problem.

Question: Pull Start
I have a Troy-Bilt TB144 tiller with a problem. When I pull the starter rope nothing engages. Is this a clutch problem or is there a shear pin in there that has broken?
Reply: Pull Start
My guess would be that the teeth on the starter pulley have worn down. The starter pulley is item #52 on page B of the parts diagram. Replacing the starter pulley should solve the problem. The starter pulley is part #753-05072.
I hope this helps,
Question: Old Gas
I think the carb may be gunked up with old gas. Is it feasible to try and clean it up or should I just get a new one? The engine will start but will not keep running. It acts like it is starving for gas. I pulled the gas filter off to see if that made a difference but it did not. It has fresh gas now and I cleaned the air filter. It will run if I keep squirting starting fluid into the breather. When you push the primer bulb until it is full of gas you can not push it anymore.
Question: Clutch Drum Assy
How do you get the clutch drum assembly off of the shaft?

Removal of the clutch drum isn't too hard of a project at all if you know a few tricks first. We have prepared an article and video that will provide you with all of the information you will need to remove the clutch drum. You can find the article and video at the following link...
I hope this helps you with your repair!
