Question: Check For Spark

fla2az2tn

How do I check for Spark on 2 cycles such as this Ryobi?

WJA

Hello fla2az2tn,

We have an article on How to Test a Small Engine for Spark. Read through this article and it should show you the steps on how to test for a spark. If you don't have a spark plug tester as shown. You should be able to pick one up at a local automotive supply store.

Hope this helps,

Question: Fuel Lines?

1080231

There two lines out of fuel tank - a black line and a clear line. Both will not attach to carburetor housing. What parts are these?
Wile_E_Coyote
Reply: Fuel Lines?

Wile_E_Coyote

Clear line goes to the bottom of the carb. and the black line goes to the top of the primer bulb.
Ryobi doesn't seem to have show the part I'm searching for. I'd call it the "plow" assembly which is adjusted to either increase or decrease the depth as one tills? Does anyone know the number of the part I need? It seems silly but as old as this 410 R #13A6987 tiller is, it still works after about 10 years of hard work. I simply can't find this part after I disassembled it for cleaning last fall. Any help appreciated.

Jim40502

It depends on who the manufacturer of the carb is..i.e. Walbro, Nikki, Zama... This will be clearly marked on the carb body. Once you find that, it will also have the model number of the carb stamped on the body as well.(ex. Walbro WT141) You can then go to the their web site and they all have a detailed illustrated parts for your carb. Good Luck.

Question: Clutch Cover

cg1

My clutch cover melted and broke in two causing the motor to come off the tiller. Upon inspection I found the clutch drum has some play in it. As in you can wiggle it about a 1/4 ". I removed it and inspected it and don't see anything wrong with it so I re-installed it. Is it supposed to have some play in it or is it supposed to stay solid? Maybe this is why the cover melted.
UtahAV
Reply: Clutch Cover

It is normal to have about a 1/4" of play back and forth on the clutch drum but there should be no side to side movement. It sounds like a bad clutch drum.

I hope this helps,

Hi Eisenmann. I have seen the folowing: Remove the spark plug and place a short length of rope (Nylon cord or shoe string) into the cylinder. This will hold the piston in place and keep the clutch from turning as you use a T20 or T25 Torx drive (depending oon model mine is a Ryobi 720r and used a T20)to loosen the screw and remove the drum, exposing the clutch. Remove one of the springs and the clutch assembly comes off. Note on my Ryobi I had to push the cord into the exhaust port instead of removing the spark plug. Hope this helps.

i replaced primer & line because it was rotten. now the tiller will run for about 2 minutes and dies. it will keep running if i keep priming it.
UtahAV
Reply: Ryobi 410r Tiller

UtahAV

Hi Wade,

I would guess that the problem is caused by dirt or debris in the carburetor. The fuel is not flowing through the carb so the engine starts to die. When you press the primer it squirts another supply of fuel into the carb and the engine runs again. Either cleaning or replacing the carb should solve the problem. If you decide to clean the carb you might find the following article and video helpful...

The fuel system is a sealed vacuum. This is my problem. If the primer is cracked the vacuum is broken, too much air to the air/fuel mixture, bogs it out.

You will lose the prime and it will suck air and probably run bad. It could also leak.

On my 410r the lines are as follows:

Line from tank with filter goes directly to inlet pipe on bottom of carb.

Line from tank without filter (possibly green(ish) goes to lower pipe of primer bulb assembly

Line from upper pipe on primer assembly goes to pipe on top of carb.

How do you seal the fuel line to the gas tank? Do you use a glue?
Terry

I cut my fuel lines and drilled the tank out and fitted rubber grommets. It has not leaked since. I think that the original design was very poor.
Drew
Reply: Fuel Line

Drew

You need to put the fuel line through the gas tank then push the nipples through the bottom slightly pulling the gas fuel line at the same time. The white washers will hold the line on the the fitting and no need for any glue and it will be as good as new. The gas fuel line is a 1/8 inch tubing and the primer line is smaller.

jackp
Question: Ryobi 410r Tiller

jackp

I am attempting to replace the recoil spring. I began taking it apart at the Clutch cover end. I have removed all the screws around the starter housing assembly such that there is about 3/8" play between the SH assembly and the shroud extension and stand. I believe that the clutch drum assembly is attached to the powershaft by a bolt/screw with a star/slot head that is accessible down thru the clutch drum assembly.
Am I on the right track? Can I dissasemble the unit and get to the recoil spring by loosening the connector that is visible down the clutch drum assembly. Would I turn this counter clockwise to remove?
UtahAV
Reply: Ryobi 410r Tiller

UtahAV

I think you are on the right track jackp. There should be a Torx screw (probably a T-20) down in the hole on the clutch assembly. You will need to remove the spark plug and put a rag or an old shoe lace down in there. You are making it so the piston can't rotate while you remove the screw and the clutch. Just be careful to leave enough of the rag or string sticking out that you can remove it later. The screw will remove counter clockwise. After the drum is off then you can grasp the clutch with a large set of adjustable pliers again counter clockwise.

Hope this gets things going for you!
