Question: Owner

663532

I recently ordered a 1/4 inch collet for my porter cable router, and when I snap it into the collet nut I can't get a 1/4 inch bit in it. Even when it's not in the collet nut the bit fits really tight. My router model # is 6902, type 4, SN 197718 the collet part # i ordered is 876669, What could be the problem?

Hello 663532,

You may have received a collet that has been machined wrong. You may want to contact our Customer Service Department @ 866-802-6383 and tell them your situation. They will be glad to take care of you.

Question: Porter Cable Routers

78963cable

can i just replace the fans on 6902 and 690lr
routers without having to buy both armatures?

Hi 78963cable,
Generally speaking no.Routers spin at very high RPM putting high stress loads on fans. This is why you see them made out of metal and not plastic. For safety sake its best to replace the whole armature assembly.Hope that helps.Good luck.

Question: Switch

Hello 964312,

The manufacture has used a couple of different types of switches depending on the type number of your router. If your old switch did not have the spring at the end of the wire. You may have received the wrong one . If you could post your Type Number we could help you out with your problem.

Hope this helps,

Question: 6902 Switch

Will the 842606 toggle switch listed above fit on my 6902 type 2 router? The nasty dust proof switch it came with died today. I have never liked that type of switch anyway.

I need to replace the switch. The replacement does not appear fasten the same as the original. Do you snip wires and twist then tape.
Can I use a variable speed control switch on my old 6902 router?? I have some work to do and the speed of the router should be slowed due to the size of the bit.

Question: PC 6902 Armature Testing

gwsfeld

I have an old Porter-Cable 6902 router which has served me well. It started running very warm along with intermittant vibration so I took it apart thinking the bearings were bad. Not so. I diid a resistance check on the commutator and the readings across all segments was lest than an ohm. All segments to each other read less than an ohm. I don't think this is normal. Can I assume the armature is bad? Thanks.

I am wondering if the fan can be replaced on a 690 router. Something fell down into it and bye-bye went the plastice blades in a hurry. I wonder if the collet chuck threads or pressed of so that the armature can be pull, and a new fan installed?

Hi kredd,

The chuck is threaded to the bottom of the armature shaft. Removing it is a bit of a challenge because you have little of the armature to hold on to. The easiest way is to use an impact wrench on the chuck. The quick blow from the impact will usually pull the chuck right off. The armature fan is not sold separately from the armature. The armature is part #903660.

I hope this helps with your repair!

Mark,

Thanks for the information. I wondered if the fan was replaceable. In looking at the parts diagram on this website, it does show a replacment fan for the 690, pn 874299 for $10.22. Not sure if this is a the right part, maybe it is a press on item that is pretty dicey...

Hi kredd,

I was just looking at the pictures. I forgot to actually read the words...

There are many Type numbers and changes to the armature fan but it appears that all of them do change to part #874299. Sorry I tried to steer you in the wrong direction.

Thanks!

Mark, No problem. I did get the collet nut off with an impact wrench and pressed off the broken fan with an arbor press and a split plate to get behind the fan. The new fan is ordered and should be easy to press on. $15 saves an old reliable tool! Necessary in a time of recession....once again, you did help me out, thank you.

Sounds good kredd!

The 690 is the benchmark that all other midsized routers are measured against in my opinion. I have three of them in my wood shop. Not a chance I will ever replace them. I like to keep two of them setup to go with the Leigh dovetail jig. They compliment the Leigh jig beautifully!

Keep us posted on the repair!

Thanks!
