Description:
This Ball Bearing has metal shielding on both sides. This is a genuine Porter Cable replacement part that is sold individually.
  • Ball bearings are used to reduce friction between rotating parts. The balls or rollers take the load and spin, distributing the weight evenly while the minimal contact area of the ball reduces friction. This reduces wear on the tool and allows it to run smoothly.
  • Bearings experience constant wear when the tool is in operation from pressure, heat, vibration and friction. Because of this, many Bearings need periodic maintenance or replacement.

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, Nutdriver, Bearing puller, arbor press, impact wrench
    Bad bearings
Start by removing the top cap and removing the motor brushes. Now remove the collet chuck. It is threaded onto the armature shaft. The easiest way to remove it is with an impact wrench. Now remove the long screws that secure the top housing to the field housing. The armature will come out now. Use a bearing puller to remove the bearings and an arbor press to install the new ones. Put everything back together and test.

    Noisy bearing.
Replaced upper and lower bearings. I had to fabricate some tools to remove and press the new bearings.
During the repair, the on/off switch broke and I had to order a new one and replace it.
The router now runs better, smoother and quieter than it has in years.

making a lot of noise, bearing going out.
took the sander apart to get to both bearings on the motor. used a puller to pull bearings off shaft. put it back together. The reason I fixed this sander is its one of the old 1/2 sheet vibrator sanders that you can't buy anymore, but I use them a lot for my wood working projects.

I watched the bearing replacement video for Porter Cable 690 series routers on ereplacementparts.com. It was very thorough and easy to understand with good video of the entire process.

Followed the instructions exactly as stated and had no problems.
Snap ring pliers and a small bearing puller are a must. I found cheap ones at Harbor Freight which worked fine.

    Porter-Cable 505 Sander Repair
My P-C 1/2 sheet sander's motor seized up due to a bad top bearing.Once I figured out how to get inside the beast, this replacement part fit perfectly. Some tips: The old bearing may need to be pulled off with a bearing puller, a smaller version of an automotive gear/pulley puller. I borrowed one, but they can be purchased on-line for around $10 (which I eventually did just to have it on hand). Cool the field windings in the refrigerator for several hours first to contract the bearing shaft, then gently tap the new bearing onto the shaft by placing the old bearing between the new bearing and your hammer. eReplacements seems to have the greatest number of replacement parts for this sander.
