Hello James,

Depending on the type number of your plate joiner dictates what parts you will need to purchase. Porter Cable had a design change on the fence after type 2. If you have a type 1 or 2 and if you want the right pivot you will have to purchase the complete fence assembly part number, A27358. If it is a type 3 or 4 the part number you want is, 903369.

The safety lever, guide pin, & rivet. I removed the safety lever to repair it. I forgot to put the bottom plate back on the joiner & consequently the blade ran into the safety lever & tore it up. ( haste makes waste !!) The question is, how do I reinstall the rivet that holds the safety lever?

Question: Can't Change Blade In Porter Cab...

Today I bought a used plate joiner at what I thought was a great deal. But tonight when I tried to change it over from the 2" blade to the needed 4" blade, I find I can't get the blade mounting screw to come out! With a lot of hand force, I can get it to turn, but what actually appears to be happening is that the piece the screw threads into is moving against the bearing lock (a press-fit in there somewhere?), and the screw remains locked to it. I don't have a good way to brace the blade or the other piece (thought I've tried some bad ways and haven't gotten the screw to budge.

So far, I've tried force, heat (propane torch), penetrating oil, and some cussing. No sign of progress at all. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem? I'd be happy to replace any needed parts, but that's not an option until I can get the screw out!

It's a Porter Cable model 557, type 3. Not such a good deal after all, if I can't fix it.
Ideas?

I found a post on Woodnet where a guy reported that he had the same problem and had cut off the retainer ring with a Dremel and cutting disk. That worked for me, too. It took a while, but it finally came off. I just ordered a replacement ring and screw and I should be ready to go again.

My PC 557 type 3 plate jointer seems to run slower lately. It takes a long time to gather some speed and has low power.

Any tips on what could be the cause would be very appreciated.

Hey lea25,
Always check the brush's first to make sure they are making good contact and not held up by sawdust or just wore out..sometimes the brush's will just get 'stuck' and cause the tool to slow down..if your tool is noisy and is slowing down you may have a bearing ready to go out..

Anyone know how to remove the gear # 882742/ref#118 from the gear/blade housing 896796/ref# 133 on a Porter Cable 557 type 3? Looks like it is press fit on? If you ever drop your plate joiner, plan on the depth stop breaking off the housing.

To Porter Cable: How about engineering a replaceable depth stop on the housing instead of casting it into the housing?

Hey PSebby,
This is probably one for the repair shop..it is pressed on and usually needs a hyd press to remove..also once u get the new housing sometimes the clearances are not right and u have to custom fit everything..! UGH!

Question: PC 557 Type 2 Buscuit Joiner

I recently ordered a new bottom hsg to replace my old sloppy one and am having problems getting the old one off. When I loosen the old carriage (#133 in the schematic) from the grinder motor the top of the carriage is sandwiched in between the gear shaft. (#40 in the schematic) and the main blade drive gear (#118 in the scematic) how do I separate the gear shaft and the main drive gear. I don't see any visible screws or other type of release. Any help is much appreciated.

Hey taconick,
The gear [#118] is a pressed on fit..the best way is to use an hydraulic press or a arbor press but you have to be careful not to damage the housing..! sometimes they are pressed so tight you have to apply heat..this may be one for a service center to perform..
