Belt that drives the belt sander worn
Repair was very simple, I put the belt on the top cog drive and partially on the bottom cog, rolled the top cog around until the belt fell in place, maybe 15-20 seconds. Works perfect, like new and my sander is at least 10 years old, that's pretty good mileage for original belt ! Screwdriver was used to remove and replace belt cover.

Pulleys wore out &caused the cog drive belt to break.
Remove the belt guard. Loosen 2 soc. head. Bolts & raise the sanding table to the vertical position. Use the 18mm box wrench & loosen the lock nut. Then release the motor tension using the 6mm hex wrench. Remove the BD46077 Phillips screws holding the BD46015 idler & the BD46076 driving pulleys on the shafts. (CAUTION , these have left hand threads ). Slide both pulleys off their shafts. For ease of installation, install both of the pulleys & the drive belt back on their respective shafts as a unit.
Reinstall the Phillips screws holding the pulleys on their shafts & adjust the motor & drive belt
tension. DO NOT over tension the belt as that will cause premature belt failure.

Question: Is This The Right Part

1156299

Is the bushing that has the electrical plug wire going thru it and connecting to the body of the sander/disc?

Hello 1156299,

You are correct, the part number BD46103 is the strain relief in which the cord is inserted and connects to the housing of the sander.

I have a belt /disc sander. The disc works just fine, but the belt slows down when any pressure is applied when trying to use the belt sander. Is this a bushing problem?

Question: How Does The Start Relay Work?

RT_Fix_It

OK, my motor just hums when I turn it on. So I removed the Starter Cap and it tested good on DVM - it starts at low Resistance and charges up to an open circuit reading.

Could the Starter Relay be the problem?

For motors with starter caps, there is supposed to be a switch that disconnects the starter coil once the motor gets going. Is this the function of this relay?

Question: Capacitor

I was sanding some wood and there was a loud bang and smoke. I unplugged the sander and opened the bottom plate and found the capacitor just blew up. Paper and black stuff all over the place. This sander was only used a few times in my little shop so it was like new. What would cause this to happen? Can I safely put a new capacitor in it?

The Drive belt needs to be replaced. The "Teeth" on the belt drives the cogs. The teeth have been worn off. Remove the Drive belt cover and you'll see exactly what is wrong.

Question: Ryobi Sander Question

Dave V

I bought this Ryobi BD4600 belt sander a few years ago, using it mostly for metal fabrication. It recently started tripping the main circuit breaker, and I'm assuming that from the repeated metal use, that the motor is shorting internally. I never ran the unit with a vacuum attached, and assume the build of of metal shavings has created this problem. I pulled the motor and cleaned it thoroughly w/electrical contact cleaner, and blew the whole unit out w/compressed air. Still trips the breaker.

Has anyone experienced this problem?? a replacement motor is the same $ as a new machine.

i would look at the flats on the gears and see if they are now round
The belt that drives the 4 x 6 sanding belt does not stand up to even moderate sanding. This is a big draw back on this tool. Plus finding a place that supplies replacement belts is a real pain.

I am an amateur woodworker who has a BD 4600 Belt/Disc Sander and am quite pleased with it. I have replaced the sanding belt twice and the sanding pads several times, and found both fairly easy to change. I have been very pleased with all of my Ryobi tools.

This seems to be a seriuos problem with a lot of users . There is no excuse for this . Mine is now going to become a warrenty problem . Yes I am really ticked off

think you're pissed? I had a drive belt break, and went through the trouble of finding one. put it on, and the sanding belt wouldn't track right...found that a snap ring on the inboard side of the shaft bearing had broken. tried to remove the shaft, and stripped the screw holding it in place. I didn't know it was a left hand thread. Looked everywhere for a new screw, had to have one machined...yes, machined. Thought this nightmare was done, five minutes ago i find that the inboard channel the snap ring should fit in to keep the drum from contacting the housing is chamferred... there is no way to keep a snap ring in place. This is the sum of maybe twenty hours dealing with this... i'd like to throw this piece of crap through the window at lowes.... now i've got to buy another one...i do have a couple of spare drive belts and plenty of parts....

There is no problem finding and purchasing the drive belt for the Ryobi BD4600.
The 4x36 sanding belts are available everywhere.. and... the drive belt, part# BD46075 is quite available on line for $5 to $8, including at Ryobis' own web site.
$6.60 at Ryobis' site :)

The motor windings in mine is fried. It still turns with a little assistance....either direction. I'm not real thrilled but don't want to make a boat anchor out of it yet. Any of you ready to rid yourselves of the motor? A new motor is available but it cost as much as a new machine!!

I have owned the bd4600 for some time now.. the only thing that has gone wrong is the drive belt.. the one thing I would recommend is a better disk sander table. This one is a little weak. Here on e replacement link removed they listed and had available the belts. It is easy to replace. following the instructions and loosening the tensioner is all it took..... for a nice portable this is a good machine..

OK tool but replacing something as simple as a drive belt is ridiculously impossible, make me want to chuck the unit in the trash. Parts listed on line do not include a drive belt for the belt sander. The store that sold me the Ryobi BD4600 doesn't carry replacement belts, its been suggested they might be available the next county over. Finding disc belts on the internet is no less frustrating, so for now I have useless tool within six months of purchase.

Part BD46075, available for $6.60 here, covers the drive belt. I've replaced two drive belts (and I just ordered a couple more of them.) The key is not to over-tension the belt. I've actually been reasonably happy with the BD4600. For a low-end, casual user belt/disc sander, it's done quite well by me. It's not meant for metal fabrication or high-end, industrial/construction work - it's not designed for it.
