If you have Troy-Bilt lawn mower with a broken or damaged muffler, it's going to need to be replaced. Your first step should not be to take it to a repair shop. Instead, try your hand at fixing it yourself by following the steps listed in this article.

1. Open the hood

Simply pop it open to gain access to the internal parts.

 

2. Remove the lightbulbs

The bulbs (headlights) are located near the headlights on the inside of your mower -- simply pop them out.

 

3. Remove the wiring harness

Once you've removed the light bulbs from the inside of the hood, remove the wiring harness that they're connected to.

 

4. Remove the hood

Lift the hood up and away from the mower -- it'll just come right off.

  Removing the Muffler

1. Remove the muffler cover

Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts on each side of this cover, then set the cover aside.

 

2. Remove the muffler strap bolt

Simply remove this strap bolt with a wrench.

 

3. Remove the two muffler bolts

The final bolts you'll need to remove are located at the end of the manifold -- use a socket wrench to remove these to fully detach the muffler.

  Installing the Muffler

1. Install a new muffler gasket

It's a smart idea to replace the muffler gasket before installing the muffler.

 

2. Mount the muffler

Secure the muffler manifold with the two bolts that were removed previously.

 

3. Replace the bolt on the muffler strap

Secure this bolt with a wrench.

 

4. Replace and secure the muffler cover

Place the cover back into its original position and secure with the two bolts on each side.

1. Reset the hood to its original location

Set the mower hood back onto the mower -- it should 'snap' back in.

 

2. Reinstall the wiring harness and lightbulbs

Snap the two headlight bulbs back into the mower hood and tuck the wiring harness back into its original location.

 

3. Shut the hood

Shut the hood to finalize the repair.
