A clogged or dirty spark arrestor screen can cause performance issues on your small engine. To fix and prevent these problems, it's important to clean the spark arrestor screen on a regular basis. Follow the instructions below and you'll have your machine running like new in no time.

Take a look at the parts available for your Tanaka equipment here.

  Cleaning the spark arrestor screen:

1. Gain access to the muffler

Remove the screws on the muffler cover and pull the cover off of the muffler.

2.
Remove the spark arrestor assembly

Remove the screws securing the spark arrestor and detach it from the muffler.

Once the spark arrestor assembly has been removed from the muffler, split the spark arrestor screen away from the exhaust pipe and set it aside.

3.
Clean the spark arrestor screen

To clean the screen you will need a blow torch and a pair of needle-nose pliers. We recommend doing this outside to avoid potential fire danger.

Hold the screen with a pair of needle-nose pliers while using the torch to heat the screen til it is glowing orange and all of the carbon has been burnt off.

4.
Set the screen aside to let it cool

Once the screen is cool to the touch, re-install it in the exhaust pipe.

5. Mount the spark arrestor assembly

Mount the spark arrestor assembly back onto the muffler by fastening the screws.

6.
Install the muffler cover

Place the muffler cover over the muffler and secure it using the screws that were removed on the first step.
