The fuel filter attaches to a length of fuel line inside the fuel tank. The fuel filter is weighted, which allows the filter to move around in the tank, and always stay submerged in fuel as the engine is tipped.
The fuel filter removes dirt or other debris that might be in the fuel. The fuel passages in the carburetor are tiny, and it doesn't take much dirt to plug them, so a properly maintained fuel filter is critical to a good-running engine.
The fuel filter should be inspected often, and replaced at least yearly. If the fuel filter becomes clogged, the flow of fuel will be restricted, causing the engine to not start, to run poorly, or to sporadically die.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the fuel filter on a Poulan chainsaw.
Let's get started. REMOVING THE FUEL FILTER [top] 1. Remove the fuel filter.
Unscrew and remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank.
To make your own fuel line retriever, curve the end of a sturdy length of wire into the shape of a hook.
Insert the wire hook into the fuel tank and retrieve the fuel line containing the fuel filter.
Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line (using long-nosed pliers as needed).
INSTALLING THE NEW FUEL FILTER [top] 2. Install the fuel filter.
Install the new fuel filter onto the fuel line.
Tuck the fuel line (and new filter) into the fuel tank.
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT [top] 3. Reinstall the fuel cap.
