String trimmer out of whack? It's time to face the fix. Whether you are a legendary landscaper or a weekend weed whacker, eReplacementParts.com provides the parts, procedures and facts you need to fearlessly fix what fails you.
The fuel line grommet creates a seal between the fuel lines and the fuel tank. Because it is made of rubber, the grommet will eventually deteriorate and crack. When this happens, you may notice fuel leaking from the top of the tank. Replacing the grommet is easy to do, especially when you follow the steps below.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the fuel line grommet on an Echo trimmer (model SRM-225).
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE FUEL LINE GROMMET [top] 1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
Loosen the thumb screw.
Remove the air cleaner lid.
Remove the air filter.
2. Drain the fuel.
Drain any excess fuel from the tank before servicing the unit.
3. Remove the fuel cap.
Unscrew and remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank.
4. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line.
To make your own fuel line retriever; curve the end of a sturdy length of wire into the shape of a hook.
Insert the wire hook into the fuel tank and retrieve the fuel line containing the fuel filter.
Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line with a twisting and pulling motion.
Remove the fuel line clip.
5. Remove the fuel lines from the grommet.
Pull the return fuel line up and out of the tank grommet.
Pull the incoming fuel line up and out of the tank grommet.
Pull the vent line up and out of the tank grommet.
6. Remove the fuel line grommet.
Use a screwdriver to carefully pry the grommet out of the fuel tank.
INSTALLING THE NEW FUEL LINE GROMMET [top] 7. Install the fuel line grommet.
Lightly coat the edge of the new grommet with 2-cycle engine oil (this will lubricate the grommet for easier installation).
Install the new grommet onto the fuel tank.
Use a screwdriver (as needed) to press and seat the grommet into the ridge on the fuel tank.
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT [top] 8. Reinstall the fuel lines.
One (or more) of the existing fuel lines may already contain tapered ends.
Use wire cutters or scissors to cut similar angles (tapers) on the ends of the remaining fuel lines. (Tapered endings allow the lines to slide more easily into the new grommet.)
Lightly coat the ends of the fuel lines with 2-cycle engine oil.
Insert the FUEL VENT LINE into the grommet and feed any excess (slack) line into the fuel tank.
Insert the INCOMING FUEL LINE into the grommet and feed any excess (slack) line into the fuel tank.
Insert the RETURN FUEL LINE into the grommet and feed any excess (slack) into the fuel tank.
9. Reinstall the fuel filter.
Insert the wire hook into the fuel tank and retrieve the incoming fuel line.
Use wire cutters or scissors to remove the angle that was added earlier. (The tube needs to be squarely cut to install the fuel filter.)
Slide the FUEL LINE CLIP over the fuel line and hold the clip approximately 1/4 of an inch from the end of the tube.
Install the fuel filter onto the end of the fuel line. The ring clip should expand slightly to accommodate the flared connection, and then tighten around the narrower portion of the fitting. Perform this step in one continuous motion. If the ring clip slides backwards (further onto the onto the fuel line), reposition the clip and start again.
10. Reinstall the fuel filter into the fuel tank.
Insert the fuel filter (and fuel line) into the fuel tank.
11. Reinstall the fuel cap.
Reinstall the fuel cap onto the fuel tank.
12. Reinstall the air filter.
Install the air filter into the air cleaner lid.
13. Reinstall the air filter lid.
Install the air filter lid onto the air cleaner case.
Secure the air filter lid with the thumbscrew.
