Collets
A collet is a sleeve around a shaft, or spindle, and when it is tightened, grips on the shaft. If the collet is worn out, it will not be able to clamp down as tight on the shaft of the bit. Simply replace the collet by unscrewing the collet nut from the shaft. Remove the collet and install a new one. Thread the collet nut back onto the shaft and tighten.

When the collet nut is tighten, it causes the collet to grip firmly on the shaft. A cracked, stripped or broken collet nut will impact its ability to keep a tight grip on bits. To replace a collet nut, unscrew it from the shaft and install a new nut on the shaft.

Worn shafts on bits will not be able to lock into the collet and will slip inside of it. Replace any worn bits with new ones.
