Chain Saw: Only Runs With The Choke On

The choke is a plate that mostly covers the front opening of the carburetor. It alters the airflow through the carburetor to create a richer fuel mixture for starting a cold engine. If the carburetor is plugged, the engine will be starved of fuel and will not run. However, if the engine is plugged, the choke will pull more fuel through the carburetor’s idle circuit and allow it to run. When the choke is turned off, the engine will die. Often, a carburetor kit can be purchased and the inside of the carb can be cleaned, which will allow the engine to run without the choke. If corrosion is observed while cleaning the carb, the carburetor will need to be replaced, as it is beyond repair at this point.
