Bench Grinder: Bad Vibration

If the adapter in the grinding wheel of your bench grinder has been installed to reduce the grinding wheel bore, it could cause bad and odd vibrations. Replace your adapter and its location to fix this problem.

If the bearings on your bench grinder are worn out it can cause bad vibrations. To repair, first remove the screws to get the hubs off. Next, check if the shaft of the motor is loose. If so, remove it by pulling it out from one end. There are bearings on each end of the shaft. If they are both worn out, then replace both. Remove bearings from either end and hammer in the new one onto the shaft. You can now reassemble your grinder by placing the shaft back in and securing it by placing the hub back on. For more installation instructions, refer to the manual provided by the manufacturer. Tip: make sure to purchase bearings with the right measurements to ensure the shaft is secured.

If the flanges that are located on each side of the grinding wheel are worn out or warped in your bench grinder it can cause the grinder to have bad vibrations. Replace the flanges to fix this problem.

If the shaft in your bench grinder is bent, it can make odd noises and vibrate excessively. To replace the shaft, remove screws and pull off the hub on both sides. The shaft should be held perfectly in place or it can affect the motor. If you find it to be loose, check the bearings, you might need to replace them as well. To pull the shaft out, push from one end of the grinder using a hammer until it comes out from one end. Now you are ready to install a new shaft.

If your grinding wheel is making bad vibrations and noises, then it could be responsible for your bench grinder as a whole suffering from bad vibrations. If it is defective it can cause this symptom and will need to be replaced to fix this problem.
