How to Install the Type-1 Guard on a DeWALT Grinder

This guard is an optional type-1 guard for your grinder. The type-1 guard covers both the top and bottom of the wheel. It fits 4.5-inch wheels. The type-1 guard is commonly used with cut-off wheels and diamond cutting wheels.

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE GUARD   1. Remove the guard.

a. Unscrew and remove the flange nut from the spindle. (Use the wrench supplied with the grinder, if necessary).

b. Use two screwdrivers to pry the flange away from the spindle.

c. Disengage the locking latch on the top of the guard.

d. Rotate the guard to disengage the locking tabs from the slots on the hub.

e. Remove the guard from the grinder.

INSTALLING THE TYPE-1 GUARD

  2. Install the guard.

a. Release the locking latch on the new guard.

b. Align the tabs on the new guard with the slots on the hub.

c. Install the new guard onto the hub.

d. Rotate the guard to the desired position.

e. Secure the guard with the locking latch.

REASSEMBLING THE UNIT

  3. Reinstall the flange.

a. Install the flange onto the spindle.

b. Press the flange firmly onto the spindle to seat the O-ring.

c. Depress the spindle-lock button.

d. Rotate the flange until it engages the internal hub. 4. Reinstall the flange (lock) nut.

a. Thread the flange nut onto the spindle.

b. Secure the flange nut with the wrench (supplied with the grinder).
