The switch on your planer is rocker-type switch that interrupts both the hot and neutral power wires. It has a large actuator attached to it. The switch can wear over time, and eventually fail. The actuator can also be accidentally broken off.
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE SWITCH 1. Remove the switch.
a. Remove the (4) screws securing the switch to the planer.
b. Pull the switch assembly (and wires) out of the housing.
c. Note the location of the wires to simplify re-installation.
d. Use long-nosed pliers to disconnect the wires from the terminals on the switch.
e. Remove the switch from the unit.
2. Remove the switch plate.
a. Depress the tabs on the inside of the switch to disengage the tab locks.
b. Remove the switch from the switch plate.
INSTALLING THE NEW SWITCH
3. Install the switch.
a. Align the eyelets (on the actuator) of the new switch with the lock loop on the switch plate.
b. Press the new switch assembly into the switch plate until the tab locks engage.
c. Connect the wires to the terminals on the new switch (in their original configuration).
d. Install the new switch assembly (and wires) into the housing.
e. Install the switch cover plate.
f. Secure the new switch assembly (and cover plate) the planer with the (4) screws.
