CHAIN AND SPROCKET

Does the drive wheel on your band saw no longer drive? If so, you might need a new chain sprocket kit. The chain sprocket kit consists of a new drive sprocket and a drive chain. The drive sprocket is made of a durable plastic. The plastic gear acts as a safety, protecting the rest of the saw from overuse. The gear will fail if the saw is bound-up or consistently overstressed. Because it is plastic, it will also wear down after years of normal use. When the gear fails, it is common for the drive wheel to skip; engaging and then disengaging. You may also hear a popping or grinding sound.

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE CHAIN AND SPROCKET   1. Remove the rear blade pulley cover.

a. Remove the three screws securing the blade pulley cover.

b. Remove the blade pulley cover from the saw.

  2. Remove the rear blade pulley.

a. Use retaining-ring pliers to remove the retaining ring from the pulley shaft.

b. Remove the nylon washer.

c. Lift the blade pulley (wheel) away from the saw.

  3. Remove the chain and sprocket.

a. Lift the drive chain and sprocket out of the gear case.

INSTALLING THE NEW CHAIN AND SPROCKET

  4. Install the chain and sprocket.

a. Note: the notched side of the sprocket should be facing the blade pulley (when installed). The smooth metal side of the sprocket should be facing the gear case.

b. Install the new chain onto the new sprocket.

c. Install the new sprocket and chain (as a single assembly) into the gear case. The chain should smoothly engage the teeth of both the motor sprocket and the new drive sprocket.

REASSEMBLING THE UNIT

  5. Reinstall the rear blade pulley.

a. Install the rear blade pulley onto the shaft.

b. Rotate the blade pulley until the notches on the sprocket engage the tabs on the underside of the blade pulley.

c. Install the nylon washer.

d. Secure the blade pulley with the retaining ring.

  6. Reinstall the blade pulley cover.

a. Install the blade pulley cover.

b. Secure the blade pulley cover with the three screws.
