The clamp screw (also known as the base lock screw) is a specialty component that helps secure the router base to the motor. The screw features an offset head, which is engineered to precisely fit the clamp assembly on the router. Stripped threads are the most common reason for replacing the screw. This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the clamp screw on a Porter Cable 690 series router.

The Fix   REMOVING THE CLAMP SCREW [top] 1. Remove the clamp screw.

Loosen and remove the clamp knob.

  INSTALLING THE NEW CLAMP SCREW [top] 2. Install the new clamp screw.

Install the new clamp screw onto the clamp assembly. Note that one side of the screw contains an extended flange (at the head). The flanged portion of the head should be installed against the router.

Reinstall the washer.
