How to Replace the Power Cord on a Makita Planer

The power cord is a two-wire, 16-gauge cord. Power cords tend to receive lots of abuse. The cord can be cut, nicked, internally damaged or have the prongs broken off. A damaged cord should be immediately replaced to avoid an electric shock.

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE POWER CORD   1. Begin by removing the side cover from the top handle with a screwdriver.
2. Remove the cord clamp.
3. Note the location of the wires on the switch.
4. Remove the wires.
5. Remove the strain relief from the old cord.  

INSTALLING THE NEW POWER CORD   6. Slide the strain relief over the wires.
7. Use the old cord as a guide to cut the new wires to proper length.
8. Strip back about a quarter-inch of insulation from each of the wires.
9. Twist the wires.
10. Slide the eyelet onto the wire and crimp it in place.
11. Reinstall the wires to the switch. The black wire on the switch side and the white wire on the opposite side.
12. Tuck the field wires back in place.
13. Align the strain relief with the housing.
14. Secure the cord with the cord clamp.
15. Reinstall the top handle cover.
