Crank case seals keep the oil in the engine, around the crank shaft. If you notice a leak around these seals, they should be replaced. We will note at this juncture that this is considered a more advanced repair. To replace these seals, start by removing all the covers. Next, remove the chain bar, then the flywheel cover, then the clutch. Note: you will need to hold onto the flywheel to prevent movement when removing the clutch. Next, remove the oil pump and flywheel. You will need a puller to remove the flywheel. Remove the key way, then the muffler, and the cylinder. Next, remove the crankcase bolts and pins and pull apart. Install 2 self-tapping screws into the seal and pull out the seal. Install a new gasket on the cylinder head base and reinstall the cylinder head. Reinstall the muffler, then the flywheel with the key way, and the oil pump. Gaskets
Gaskets
Gaskets create seals between two joining pieces, keeping fluids from leaking out. If you notice any oil leaking from a gasket while inspecting the engine for an oil leak, that gasket will need to be replaced. For a valve cover gasket, simply remove the bolts holding the valve cover in place, clean both surface areas with parts cleaner and a soft brush, re-install a new valve cover gasket, and tighten down to the manufacturer’s requirements.

Caps
Caps
The purpose of the cap is to seal the oil in the tank and prevent leaks. If the cap is leaking, you can replace the entire thing. Alternatively, you can change the O-ring inside the cap by prying it off with a small screw driver or pick, and replacing it with one of identical size.

Covers
Covers
The covers protect moving parts and keep the oil inside the engine. If you see oil leaking from a cover, then it is time to replace that cover. For valve covers, you should remove the valve cover bolts, clean the contact area on the cylinder head, install a new gasket and cover, and bolt it all back down. Finally, ensure you tighten to the manufacturer’s specifications.
