String trimmer out of whack? It's time to face the fix. Whether you are a legendary landscaper or a weekend weed whacker, eReplacementParts.com provides the parts, procedures and facts you need to fearlessly fix what fails you.
Fuel tubes are generally made of rubber or plastic, which means that they will eventually harden and crack. A cracked vent tube creates an opening directly into the fuel tank. This opening allows fuel to leak out of the tank whenever the trimmer is turned on its side. Replacing the tube is very easy to do.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the fuel vent tube on an Echo trimmer (model SRM-225).
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE VENT TUBE [top] 1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
Loosen the thumb screw.
Remove the air cleaner lid.
Remove the air filter.
2. Drain the fuel.
Drain any excess fuel from the tank before servicing the unit.
3. Remove the vent tube.
Locate the fuel tube containing the fuel tank vent and gently pull the vent assembly away from the pocket behind the engine cover.
Remove the fuel tank vent from the end of the vent tube (pull gently from both sides).
Remove the metal clip from the end of the vent tube.
Remove the fuel tube from the fuel tank by pulling the tube up and out of the fuel tank grommet.
INSTALLING THE NEW VENT TUBE [top] 4. Install the vent tube.
To make installation into the fuel tank (through the grommet) simpler, use wire cutters to cut a taper at the end of the fuel tube.
Lightly lubricate the tapered end of the fuel tube with 2-cycle engine oil (this will allow the tube to pass through the grommet more smoothly).
Thread the tapered end of the new fuel tube through the tank grommet and into the fuel tank.
Slide the metal clip over the new fuel tube and position the clip approximately a quarter of an inch from the end of the tube.
Install the fuel tank vent onto the end of the vent tube; the ring clip should expand slightly to accommodate the flared connection and then tighten around the narrower portion of the fitting on the filter. Perform this step in one continuous motion. If the ring clip slides backwards (further onto the onto the fuel tube); reposition the clip and start over.
Thread the fuel tank vent and tube behind the remaining fuel lines and tuck the vent into the pocket beneath the engine cover.
Adjust the length of the fuel tube (as necessary) by feeding additional slack into the fuel tank (through the grommet).
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT [top] 5. Reinstall the air filter.
Install the air filter into the air cleaner lid.
6. Reinstall the air filter lid.
Install the air filter lid onto the air cleaner case.
Secure the air filter lid with the thumbscrew.
