How to replace the main pipe assembly on an Echo trimmer The Facts

String trimmer out of whack? It's time to face the fix. Whether you are a legendary landscaper or a weekend weed whacker, eReplacementParts.com provides the parts, procedures and facts you need to fearlessly fix what fails you.

The main pipe assembly consists of the metal pipe, the cable liner and the two rubber stoppers that secure the liner. While it is possible to replace these parts individually, it can be faster and simpler to replace the main pipe assembly as a whole.

This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the main pipe assembly on an Echo SRM-225 trimmer.

Let's get started.

Slide the drive shaft out of the old pipe assembly.

 Remove the shaft

Generously apply grease to the opening (at the gear housing-end) of the new main pipe. The idea is to apply enough grease to lubricate the length of the drive shaft as it slides through the opening.

 Lubricate the drive shaft

Slide the drive shaft into the new main pipe.

 Install the drive shaft

REASSEMBLING THE UNIT [top] 6. Pre-align the clamp rings.

Place the control handle assembly on a flat work surface (with the levers facing up).

 Align the assembly

Note that one side of each clamp ring features a small detent (curved bump); and one side is straight (and flat).

 Align the detents

Place each clamp ring into the control handle assembly with the detents facing up.

 Install the clamps

Slide the main pipe through the two clamp rings (in the direction it would normally be installed).

 Install the pipe

Lift the main pipe (and the clamps) away from the control handle. (This will ensure that the clamps are properly aligned for installation (in subsequent steps).

 Lift the pipe away

  7. Reinstall the main pipe into the engine assembly.

Slide the main pipe (and drive shaft) into the engine assembly until the indicator marks on the pipe align with the holders.

 Install the main pipe

Secure the engine to the main pipe with the (2) screws.

 Secure the engine clamps

  8. Reinstall the front handle assembly.

Align the lower half of the handle assembly with the indicator marks on the main pipe.

 Align the lower handle

Install the top half of the front handle assembly onto the lower half.

 Install the handle

Secure the front handle assembly with the (4) screws.

 Secure the handle

  9. Reinstall the gear housing and shield assembly.

Slide the gear housing and shield assembly onto the end of the main pipe.

 Install the gear housing

Rotate to gear housing assembly (if necessary) until the drive shaft engages the gearbox.

 Rotate the gear head

Align the hole in the top of the gear housing with the hole in the top of the main pipe.

 Align the mounting hole

Install and secure the single alignment screw.

 Install the screw

Secure the (2) clamp screws.

 Secure the clamps

  10. Reinstall the control handle assembly.

Use a screwdriver to tuck the ignition wires into the channels along the inside of the control handle.

 Tuck the wires

Align the throttle cable with the grooves along the control handle (above the ignition wires).

 Align the throttle cable

Position the control handle assembly on the main pipe.

 Align the handle

Align the metal ring clamps with the slots in the control handle assembly.

 Align the clamps

Install (but do not fully tighten) the (2) screws into the ring clamps.

 Install the clamps

Rotate the control handle assembly into alignment with the engine and the front handle.

 Align the handle

Fully tighten the screws in the ring clamps to secure the control handle assembly.

 Secure the clamps

  11. Reinstall the control handle assembly cover.

Install the cover onto the control handle assembly.

 Install the cover

Secure the cover with the (4) screws.

 Secure the cover
