Miter Saw: Table Binding or Doesn't Adjust Smoothly

If your miter saw table is binding or doesn't adjust smoothly it could be due to the slide plate, handle, fence, knob or kerf plate. Before hiring an expensive service to fix the problem, try fixing it yourself. We are here to make the repair process as smooth as possible.

Fences
Fences
The fence is located on the base. The purpose of the fence is to hold your work piece against it for precise cuts. To replace the fence, remove the screws securing the fence to the base. Remove the fence and install a new one, securing it with the screws.

Handles
Handles
Handles allow you to make certain adjustments on your miter saw. If you have a broken handle, you can remove it by unscrewing it with your hand and screwing in a new one. If the handle is broken off, use pliers to remove what is left of the handle and unscrew it.

Once removed, install the new knob. If the knob has broken off, but the threaded part of the knob is still in place, use pliers to unscrew it.

Plate
Kerf plates are adjustable and prevent kick backs during cuts. Sometimes, when a kerf plate is damaged, it can impact how smoothly the table adjusts. Remove the old kerf plates by removing the screws. Clean out any debris underneath that impacts adjustments. Install the new kerf plates, adjust them to where you want them and tighten down.

Slides
Slides
The slide plate is located between the saw and the base of the miter saw, allowing the saw to rotate freely on the base. Over time, and with use, this part will wear down and require a replacement. When it wears down, it will cause the binding and also make it harder to make any adjustments. To check the condition of the slide plates, remove the fence and the kerf plates. Remove the center nut – hold onto the bolt underneath as you remove the nut on top. Make note of all of the pieces attached to it for reassembly. Separate the saw from the base. Remove the slide plate and inspect it for wear to make sure it is causing the issue. Clean the entire area.
