Demolition Hammer: Bit Won't Stay Locked in
If the bit in your demolition hammer won't stay locked in, check these parts: retainer, ball, and the bit holder assembly. Retainers
If the ball retainer is worn, or damaged, it will not be able to keep the bits locked in. To replace the retainer, start by prying off the protective cover on the end of the bit holder and remove the c-clip with pliers. Remove the washer, spring cover and the spring seat. Now, you are at the retainer ring. Remove and replace with a new retainer ring. Now, reinstall the spring seat, spring cover, ball, washer, c-clip and finally, the protective cap.
Holder
If a bit holder assembly was worn, damaged or has missing parts, this would cause it to not keep the bit locked in. To replace the bit holder assembly, start by prying off the protective cap on the nose. Remove the c-clip, washer, spring cover and the spring seat. Install the new part and reassemble in reverse order: spring seat, spring cover, washer, c-clip and finally, the protective cap.
Balls
If the steel balls in the bit holder are worn, or missing, it will cause the bits to not remain locked in. To check these balls for wear, and to replace, start by prying off the rubber cover on the nose. Remove the c-clip with pliers, then the washer, spring over and the spring seat. Pull the spring loaded collar up and remove the balls. While holding the collar up, install the new balls and then release the collar once installed.
