Chain Saw: Leaks Bar Oil

If your chainsaw is leaking bar oil, check the cap, hose, tank, and pump. Our repair and symptom guide will help you accurately identify what part needs to be replaced and how you can fix this problem yourself. Our repair information is a general guide to help you, but for more specific repair information related to your model, check your owner’s manual.

Hoses
Hoses
Some chainsaw models will have an oil delivery house that provides oil to the bar and the chain. These hoses are somewhat fragile and can occasionally develop cracks. Oil can leak from these cracks, so if you discover your oil delivery hose is cracked, it will need to be replaced. However, you will also want to check to make sure that the leak is not simply coming from a bad connection. In this case, you may be able to secure the hose on both ends, and prevent the leak that way.

Pumps
Pumps
Your chainsaw’s oil pump helps to deliver oil to the bar and chain. A failed pump housing or seal will allow oil to leak. If you discover that your oil pump seal is damaged or missing, or the housing itself is damaged, you will need to replace it before your chainsaw stops leaking.

Tanks
Tanks
Your oil tank or oil reservoir stores oil so that it can be supplied to the bar and chain during operation of your chainsaw. This is critical to the success of the chainsaw, as a bar and chain that are not properly lubricated can seize up. If the tank is leaking, you will notice oil buildup or residue around it. If you discover a crack or a hole of some kind in your oil tank, you will need to replace it to stop the leak.

Caps
Caps
Your chainsaw requires oil so the bar and chain can stay lubricated during operation. The oil tank has a cap on it that can be opened when you need to re-fill the oil, and closed during operation. This cap creates a seal that prevents oil from leaking out. A broken oil tank cap or cap seal will allow air into the tank, and this can allow oil to leak from the outlet. A broken cap, or a cap with a broken seal will need to be replaced to solve this issue.
