Bench Grinder: Smoke From Tool

If you notice smoke coming from your bench grinder check these parts first: the capacitor, switch, stator, and grinding wheel. Use our list of parts and solutions to fix your bench grinder yourself. Always refer to your owner's manual for detailed instructions.

Switches
Switches
If the switches on your bench grinder are shorted, it can cause your machine to produce smoke. To install a new switch, remember to first unplug the grinder from the power source and then disconnect wires from the old switch. Next, reconnect the wires in the right location in the new switch. Tip: test the switch to ensure it works and make sure it is secured.

If your bench grinder will not turn on and produces smoke, then make sure to check the capacitor for damage. Replace the capacitor to fix this problem by removing the wires and reconnecting them to the new capacitor. You will need pliers for this installation.

Wheels
Wheels
If the grinding wheel in your bench grinder is receiving excessive pressure from the grinding of material, you might notice smoke coming out of the tool. Check your grinding wheel, if it is worn out from this pressure, then replace it to prevent smoke and other problems. Remove hubs by unscrewing the screws surrounding the grinder to access the shaft and the grinding wheels.

Stator
Stator
If you notice smoke coming out of your bench grinder, the stator, which helps keep the motor aligned and running, could have been burnt or shorted. If so, make sure to access the motor and replace the old stator with a new one. Remember to unplug the appliance from the power source before beginning this installation.
