Blow Dryer: Won't Turn on

If your blow dryer won't turn on, you probably want to get this fixed as quickly as possible, and we can help you do that. First inspect these parts for damage: the heater, switch, and power cord. Once you have determined which part is causing the appliance to not turn on, review our guide to help locate the part and prevent this from happening further. Refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions for your model.

Power Cords
Power Cords
The power cord could be the reason your blow dryer will not turn on. This could be temporary or mean the cord needs to be replaced. If your plug has a reset button, try pressing that, or the reset button on the outlet if there is one. The cord may have tripped the circuit breaker, meaning you need to go manually turn the switch back on. If the cord has been damaged or if the GFI (ground fault interrupter) is faulty, it may need to be replaced. To access the cord, remove the plastic cover from the blow dryer handle, using a screwdriver to remove the screws. The power cord is attached the switch, and needs to be removed with a soldering iron. The new power cord can be soldered onto the switch.

Switches
Switches
Some blow dryers will have more than one. These switches can have multiple uses, but can be the same part. The physical switch is normally controlled by a knob, latch, or button, and will wear out over time. If you drop your blow dryer on the floor the switch can become misaligned. The switch is most likely located in the handle of your hairdryer, wherever you turn the switch on the exterior to turn it on. Unscrew the plastic cover on the handle to access the switch. If it is simply misaligned, slide it back into place. If the switch seems worn and not likely to stay in place, replace it with a new one.

Heaters
Heaters
Some blow dryer models have an automatic shut-off feature when the heater gets too hot. You may be able to turn your blow dryer back on by simply blowing into the front grille, where the heating assembly is located, to cool it. The heater consists of two different heating elements, a thermostat, and thermal fuses. The elements can weaken and burn out over time, in which case they need to be replaced. The thermostat and the thermal fuse can also fail causing it to not heat. To replace the heater assembly, dismantle the hairdryer by unscrewing the plastic cover and removing the front grille. The heater assembly will slide out either the front or back of the funnel. You may need to use a soldering iron to detach the wires and solder them onto the new heater.
