The variable speed switch in your cordless tool performs several functions: First, it allows you to turn the motor on or off and adjust the motor speed. Second, it allows you to change the direction the motor rotates. Third, it contains the contacts for the battery. Over time, the switch can fail. It might no longer turn the tool on; might work intermittently, or it might lose its ability to vary the speed of the motor. The battery contacts can break off, or be melted by a shorted-out battery.

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE SWITCH   1. Remove the top half of the handle.

a. Remove the screws securing the top half of the handle to the lower half.

b. Use a utility knife to slice through the two stickers on the base of the handle.

c. Lift the top half of the handle away from the lower half.

  2. Remove the switch.

a. Lift the switch assembly out of the lower handle.

b. Note the location of the switch wires (for reassembly).

c. Use long-nosed pliers to disconnect the two wires from the switch.

d. Remove the switch from the unit.

INSTALLING THE NEW SWITCH

  3. Install the switch.

a. Connect the two wires to the new switch (in the same configuration as the original wires).

b. Align the slot on the forward/reverse lever with the tab on the new switch.

c. Install the switch assembly (and F/R lever) into the lower handle.

REASSEMBLING THE UNIT

  4. Reinstall the top of the handle.

a. Tuck any exposed wires into the lower handle.

b. Install the top half of the handle.

c. Secure the top half of the handle with the screws.
