How to Replace the Swivel Base Assembly on a Wilton Vise

The swivel base assembly consists of a new base, the locking pads, the locking handles, and the bolts. The kit solves many of the common problems that can occur with the vise. The base and locking pads have teeth that mesh together to lock the vise in place (so it does not rotate during use). Over time, the teeth on the locking pads and base can wear out. The threads on the locking handles (that tighten the base and locking pads) can wear down as well.

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE SWIVEL BASE ASSEMBLY   1. Remove the swivel base assembly.

a. Loosen and remove the two locking handles from the vise.

b. Lift the top half of the vise away from the swivel base assembly.

c. Discard the old swivel base assembly (along with the old hardware).

INSTALLING THE NEW SWIVEL BASE ASSEMBLY

  2. Install the swivel base assembly.

a. Invert the top half of the vise (so that the vise jaws are resting on the work surface).

b. Install the new outer ring onto the top half of the vise (the teeth on the outer ring should remain visible).

c. Install the new locking pads onto the new locking bolts (the teeth on the locking pads should face away from the heads of the bolts).

d. Insert the new bolts (with locking pads) through the mounting holes on the base of the vise (the teeth on the locking pads should engage the teeth on the outer ring).

e. Thread the new locking handles onto the bolts.

f. Tighten the locking handles to secure the swivel base assembly to the vise.

g. Return the vise to its upright position.
