The locking pads prevent the upper portion of the vise from rotating during use (when the locking handles are tightened). The locking pads are made of cast iron and contain teeth that engage the teeth on the underside of the base (to lock the device in place). Over time, the teeth on the pads can wear down, preventing the device from locking firmly. If this occurs, you will want to inspect the teeth on the base (outer ring) for similar wear.
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE LOCKING PADS 1. Remove the locking pads.
a. Loosen and remove the two locking handles (nuts) from the vise.
b. Lift the top half of the vise away from the swivel base assembly.
c. Remove the locking pads from the two bolts.
INSTALLING THE NEW LOCKING PADS
2. Install the locking pads.
a. Invert the top half of the vise (so that the vise jaws are resting on the work surface).
b. Install the outer ring onto the top half of the vise (the teeth on the outer ring should remain visible).
c. Install the new locking pads onto the bolts (the teeth on the locking pads should face away from the heads of the bolts).
d. Insert the bolts (with new locking pads) through the mounting holes on the base of the vise (the teeth on the locking pads should engage the teeth on the outer ring).
e. Thread the locking handles onto the bolts.
f. Tighten the locking handles to secure the swivel base assembly to the vise.
g. Return the vise to its upright position.
