String trimmer out of whack? It's time to face the fix. Whether you are a legendary landscaper or a weekend weed whacker, eReplacementParts.com provides the parts, procedures and facts you need to fearlessly fix what fails you.
The fuel tank vent is basically a check valve. It allows air to enter the fuel tank, but prevents fuel and fuel emissions from escaping the tank. The most common symptom of a faulty fuel tank vent is when the engine stops suddenly after running normally for the first 5-10 minutes. After removing and replacing the fuel cap, the engine again starts and runs normally; then stops after another 5-10 minutes.
This happens because the fuel tank vent allows air to enter the fuel tank as the fuel level drops. A faulty vent will eventually create a vacuum inside the fuel tank, which deprives the engine of air. Fortunately, restoring the air is an easy repair.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the fuel tank vent on an Echo trimmer (model SRM-225).
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE TANK VENT [top] 1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
Loosen the thumb screw.
Remove the air cleaner lid.
Remove the air filter.
2. Drain the fuel.
Drain any excess fuel from the tank before servicing the unit.
3. Remove the fuel tank vent.
Locate the fuel tube containing the fuel tank vent and gently pull the vent assembly away from the pocket behind the engine cover.
Remove the fuel tank vent from the end of the vent tube (pull gently from both sides).
Remove the metal clip from the end of the vent tube.
Remove the vent tube from the fuel tank by pulling the tube up and out of the fuel tank grommet.
INSTALLING THE NEW TANK VENT [top] 4. Install the tank vent.
Slide the metal clip over the vent tube and position the clip approximately a quarter of an inch from the end of the tube.
Install the new tank vent onto the end of the vent tube; the ring clip should expand slightly to accommodate the flared connection and then tighten around the narrower portion of the fitting. Perform this step in one continuous motion. If the ring clip slides backwards (further onto the onto the vent tube), reposition the clip and start over.
Thread the fuel tank vent and tube behind the remaining fuel lines and tuck the vent into the pocket beneath the engine cover.
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT [top] 5. Reinstall the air filter.
Install the air filter into the air cleaner lid.
6. Reinstall the air filter lid.
Install the air filter lid onto the air cleaner case.
Secure the air filter lid with the thumbscrew.
