The lawn tractor is 24 years old and the mower deck was vibrating badly with a lot of bearing noises.

Takes about 45 minutes if you just replace bearings and don't remove the spindle housings. The top bearings were in pretty good shape but the bottom (larger) bearings were the ones that were shot.

I removed top nut on spindle and took off the drive pulleys and the washer under it. Replace nut a few turns and tap out the spindle carefully. Remove nut and the spindle should now come out easily.

The 10" extension I used to tap the bottom bearings out of the housing after the spindle is removed. One came out with the spindle the other was tighter in the housing. The top bearings came out easy after the spindle is removed. Replace bearings and use the top nut to pull it back together.

Replace washer and top pulley, replace blade and tighten. Blocking the blade with a piece of wood keeps the spindle from moving while the assembly is tightened. Don't over tighten top nut as it puts too much preload on bearings. Rotate with blade brake released to check. If it's hard to turn, back off top spindle nut and tap to release tension. Retighten snugly and replace deck under tractor and connect all suspension and belt connections.

Replaced the blades and it cuts and sounds like new!

Had to replace the blade mandrel and bearings

    1. Jacked up the rear of the rider mower to access the blades from the underside to remove them
    2. Removed belt to one side & remove old mandrel- a little tedious
    3. Pressed (could have used a rubber mallet) new bearings into mandrel along new shaft & packed with grease for the bearings
    4. Installed the assembled new unit & new pulley on top, put on the one blade to hold to put on the top nut
    5. Reinstalled belt around the pulleys.
    6. Put new blades on
    7. Spent 4 hours mowing
    8. Parts & fast shipping were great!

Used the part blowup diagram to take apart and put back together again. Took a little bit of trial and error...but not terribly difficult. You will need a retaining ring plier. A cheap pair from harbor freight will be fine.
