Its purpose if to create a surface for the sandpaper to be held on by the spring clamp assembly.

To remove this pad there are four Torx screws that have to be removed to release the pad from the sander.

Sander sheet pad plate was worn on front edge so it was no longer flat
1. Removed four screws from old plate.
2. Removed pad, replaced it with new pad.
3. Replaced screws

Replaced cushion sanding pad
Took 4 screws out of the old pad and installed the new pad with same screws. It was a snap.

1. Removed scews that secured part to be replace.
2. Removed the defective part paying attention to position and fit.
3. Placed new part in proper position and secured with original screws.

Sandpaper was slipping and not held securely.
1. Removed four screws securing sander backing plate.
2. Removed spring clamp assembly
3. Removed rubber cushion.
4. Cleaned surface area for new rubber cushion.
5. Peeled backing paper off new rubber cushion and adhered to correct location.
6. Positioned new spring clamp assembly in proper location.
7. Placed new sander backing plate assembly in proper location and secured with original screws.
