  • Easy repair and great advice
Very apprehensive about making this repair on my Echo weed eater with a broken shaft cable. Friends said to trash it. Talked to ereplacementparts technician and she said it was an easy fix. You tube videos were no help. Followed her advice and it took 15 min - good as new. Highly recommend!

    Saved me 200 dollars...
The drive shaft came as promised, on time and in great shape. My Echo stopped spinning and I had another trimmer picked out...274.99. I went home to think about replacing or trying to fix. Studied the YouTube video and embarked on the easiest repair ever. Saved me that expense. I suggest that you watch the video there and read the comments...you will learn tons. Only variation I had to do was remove the rotating head to seat the drive in that end and work “backwards”. Got that idea from a comment by another satisfied user in the comment section. Trial and error with a greased shaft and “old man” fingers was getting a little frustrating...remembered the suggestion to work the other way and all was good. Repair took about 30 minutes and I was able to carry on a conversation with my wife at the same time. That was harder than the repair.

I followed the directions from the e-replacement parts video on echo trimmer driveshaft repair. Mine was actually easier, since I only had a throttle cable to detach. See the video!
The other difference from the video was I couldn't get the drive shaft to go in the last inch, and it wasn't going in by spinning the drive shaft (actually a cable, really) so I spun the trimmer head while pushing on the driveshaft/cable, and that got it to go in.

    Trimmer works great again.

Started with removing string guard from Echo GT201R. Then put something in small hole so to unscrew string head. Take out small phillips head screw and removed bottom housing. From there you should be able to grab approx 4' long drive cable and pull it out. In my case it was a bit harder. Along the whole drive housing there is a plastic insert and the drive cable sits in. My drive cable broke and a piece embedded itself in this insert. I actually had to pull the whole insert out to be able to clear the broken piece. After clearing the busted piece, I slid the insert back in and then slid the new drive cable back through. Put it all back together and I was good to go.
