Mower deck cracked where mandrel bolts down

    Lawn Tractor

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    More than 2 hours

    1) I removed the mower deck from the tractor had to unhook the clips and the lowering cable
    2) I removed the upper pulley (used an impact and it came off easy)
    3) I removed the blade(also used my impact wrench
    4) Removed the mandrel
    5) Ihad to weld repair the mower deck where it had split ( this is why the mandrel broke one of the hold down bolts off)
    6) I reinforced the bolt pattern with thick fender washers at the correct bolt pattern for the new mandrel and welded the washers in place
    7) Ground off the welded areas to make them flush so the mandrel would not be in a bind when bolted back down
    8) Repainted the deck before I installed all the new parts I ordered
    9) Reinstalled the mower deck and adjusted the height to be level with the ground
    10) Checked to make sure it worked correctly and went out and mowed the grass
    11) All the parts were a perfect match to the ones I replaced and everything works as it should.

I work with my hands all the time and repair a lot of machines where I work. To me it was an easy fix prolly because of my experience. Your average homeowner might have a hard time fixing a mower deck if he or she doesn't have access to a welder which I needed in my situation. If there repair only requires a mandrel replacement because of a bad bearing it should be no problem for your average person to unbolt the broken pieces and replace them. Good luck and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty!

For the present, I used the new bolt with washer and one new blade and attached to
the lawn mower deck. I followed up with recycling the many leaves that have dropped to the grass. All parts installed are working great!! Big thank-you for being there when I needed these new parts to have a successful mowing experience. Note: The parts I ordered are of great quality. The entire experience of this process has been sincerely appreciated!!

Left blade of the mowing deck hit a rock, bent the blad and cracked the madrel

    Lutfalla - June 30, 2016
👍 1 of 1 people found this instruction helpful
Not knowing the extend of the damage I order all new parts to build an new housing (Mandrel) complete with shaft bearings and blade. Parts were exactly the same as original and fitted perfectly. Had a little trouble getting the old one off, had to break off the bolts that took some doing, but putting the new one together was a breeze. Thanks for the reasonable pricing.

    Replaced Mower blades/bolts

Removing the deck from the mower took longer than the replacement of the parts. The replacement parts were exactly what I ordered and fit perfectly. Breaking the blade bolts loose is the most difficult part. Make sure the bolts are wire brushed clean and your wrench fits tightly blocking the blades movement with a block of wood. Make sure when replacing the blades they are put on correctly with the clearly marked "Grass Side" of the blade down.
