Sheared off bolt that holds blade on mower

    Tool Type

    Lawn Mower

    Difficulty

    Time

    1-2 hours

    Tools Used

    , hammer + steel punch

I drained the gas out of the tank so I could place mower upside down on saw horses. Some oil leaked out which I captured with news paper under mower. With WD-40, I soaked the piece of the original bolt, which had sheared off about 1/4" inside the threaded socket. I repeated this several times for an hour or so. Then, I took the punch, and hammered the piece of the bolt in the "un-screw" direction, repeating the WD-40 soaking between tapping. Eventually, the bolt piece started backing out of the threaded socket until I could grab it with a vice grip, and remove it from the threaded socket. Then, I mounted the blade back on the mower using replacement bolt. Have patience. Work slowly. Use plenty of WD-40, and the piece of bolt should come out.

Drilled hole into the part of the broken bolt still inside crankshaft, I then heated the bolt that was still inside the crankshaft with a propane soldering torch and used penetrating oil to soak into thread and then used an easy-out to remove the remaining half of the bolt from inside crankshaft.
I then replaced the old parts with the new ones I had purchased from your company
