Drive wheel grass deflector broken causing lawn debris to clog gear drive
Tool Type

Difficulty

Time
15-30 minutes
Tools Used
Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set
Wheel cover assembly was broken by flying debris. Grass and dirt then jammed the self-propel gear.
Tool Type
Lawn Mower
Difficulty
Easy
Time
15-30 minutes
Tools Used
Socket set, Outside Spring Ring Pliers. Slip joint pliers.
Parts Used
1) Remove the wheel's axle bolt with 1/2" socket.
2) Remove drive gear spring ring and drive gear (the gear just slides off of the shaft with some wiggling and jiggling--no puller needed).
3) Remove & replace broken wheel cover, which will be loose and free at this point. It is held in place by the wheel itself, so when you remove the wheel and drive gear, it's completely free.
4) Replace drive gear and split ring. The drive axle will slip towards the opposite wheel, so hold it in place to get the parts back on.
5) After the spring ring is back on, slightly compress it with slip-joint pliers to ensure that it seats completely. Otherwise the dirt and grass clippings will fill the groove, and keep the spring ring from seating properly. If it's not seated well it will come off after a short time in use, and jamb the gear.
6) Replace wheel.
Wheel mount brackets mis-aligned causing gears to mis-align and slip.

Removed retainer clip on drive gear.
Removed drive gear and shims from drive shaft. Note the orientation of the gear as it must be replaced the same way it came off. It is designed to engage the shaft in the forward direction. Gear was rusted to shaft so I applied WD40 and gently pried the gear off of the shaft. The gear teeth were clogged with grass so it need to be cleaned.
Removed the gear engaging pin. This pin is essentially a woodruff key with the ability to move in an out of the groove with the help of a spring in the groove. The pin was frozen in the groove with rust and grass. It needed to be cleaned with 220 grit sand paper to remove the rust. The spring was also frozen in the groove. I sprayed it with WD40 to soften the organic material in the spring and the rust. I was eventually able to pry it out with an awl. I cleaned it and replaced in the groove.
Cleaned the drive shaft with 220 grit sand paper to remove rust and organic material.
