Clutch will not start even with an electric start.
burt for model number TB685EC
Hi Burt, Thank you for your question. If the trimmer engine runs, but the trimmer head does not spin when the throttle is engaged, the clutch may be broken. The clutch prompts the drive shaft to start rotating once a certain rotational speed is reached and allows the engine to run without always rotating the drive shaft. If the clutch is broken or the springs are not tensioned properly, the clutch may not engage at all. Disassemble the engine housing to gain access to the clutch, and check for any damage. To protect the trimmer during this repair, remove the spark plug and feed a piece of scrap starter rope into the combustion chamber, as this will stop the piston from moving while the clutch is removed. Check your user manual for the proper part number if your clutch is broken and needs replacing. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!
When I take off the starter housing there is a metal fan on the shaft that looks like it engages the starter pulleyin order to turn the shaft. Mine broke in half and I can't seem to find it any where. What part is this and do you know where I could find it. Thank you

It was pretty easy putting it back together. Just make sure your fuel tank little rubber supports is connected to your tank. and make sure your fuel line is connected back to your primer. It may come off when your are taking it apart. Make sure you are using the right tools when you take it apart. I had to use torx bit to take the the Troy Bilt trimmer housing off.

Pawls on starter broke and had to be replaced. Very poor engineering. Must be a common problem
Removed starter housing. used vice grips to remove screw in engine block
Replaced Plastic pawls on fan had to use old spring to replace the one missing in the purchased kit
Made cardboard jig with string attached to hold pawls apart while new starter housing was installed
Installed starter housing just far enough to engage the pawls in the right position
used string to pull jig out between the housing and the body finished tightening the housing
the jig is a U shaped piece of thin cardboard that fits over the shaft and keeps the pawls apart string allows its removal before the housing is tightend up

No complaints about receiving the starter housing unit I ordered. Just wish we had manufacturer’s committed to building products to last. I’ve only had this Tro Bilt trimmer a couple years, and replaced the starter housing three times. These products, that I use maybe every couple months for a few hours, should last much longer than a year. But, the E Delivery process worked well.
