Gas tank sludge, gummy carburetor, significant carbon build-up

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Socket set, Carb and choke cleaner, green scouring pad, wire brush.

I had a friend that had a Lawn Machine mower sitting under a tarp in her yard for nearly 2 years. I put gas in the tank, primed it, and it just wouldn't start. She gave it to me. I took it home, pulled off the pull-rope assembly, gas tank and carburetor, and cylinder head. When I pulled the head, the head gasket crumbled a little, so I ordered a new one. While waiting for the gasket, I blew out the carburetor and flushed the gas tank with carb cleaner. I then cleaned the spark plug and the stater magnets with more cleaner and a wire brush. I then used more cleaner and a green scouring pad to clean the carbon off of the combustion chamber, valve heads, and piston face. I also changed the oil. I got the new head gasket after a few days, put it all back together, gassed it up, and it started on the first pull.
