After disconnecting the battery ground at the battery and the electrical hookups to the starter, I had to loosen the mower-motor cover to access the two starter hold-down bolts. A deep socket with extender was used for the left bolt and had to use a torx wrench for the right hold-down bolt. Reversed sequence for installation. Worked right away.

Swapped out old starter for new one. Old starter had plastic gear. New starter had metal gear. New starter very noisy when engaging flywheel. Hope plastic teeth on flywheel aren't damaged. Gear pitch appears to be correct and does not jam. Starter gear easily retracts when releasing the key. Considered putting grease on new metal starter gear to prevent wear of the plastic flywheel teeth but think grease will attract dirt and grime and cause starter gear eventually to hang and not retract.

Living 75 miles from nearest repair place, and not an electrical guy, I replaced parts that were instrumental to start the mower. Youtube videos helped on most things, and most parts swapped out with minmal effort with common tools. BUT the replacement of the primary belt was from the lower bowels of the earth! You need to remove the mowing deck, and it helps to really get this tractor off the ground onto ramps and jack up the rear end so you can get underneath. Everything else was easy. Trouble is I'm 76 and have cancer which really messes with logical, sequential thinking. The problem with the starting issue was that I needed to replace the solenoid, the only part I didn't buy a replacement for---naturally. So I had to use a temporary, bypassing momentary switch to get the tractor to run, which it did---nicely. Having not done any of this work before, this replacing business has been an adventure. Thankfully, eReplacement people helped me through it with timely advice, and great replacement parts. They are my go-to people! Great pricing too!
