Kick back, my fault, broke fence/sub-fence on 12" miter saw

It is a good thing the fence and sub fence on the miter saw are cast aluminum and break with kickback...if they were super strong, then the saw arm or motor would take the tremendous force of the kickback, probably as a dangerous bonus: Instantly shattering the plastic blade guard (think plastic razors traveling at 100mph.) One might think kickbacks are not as dangerous as on a table saw, but when a piece of wood zipped right next to my ear and made a dent in a wooden cabinet behind me, I was instantly humbled. It is wrong to think all the force of the kickback would be toward the back of the saw.

All I can say is to be certain to take the time to use any clamps you have on your saw to secure it firmly. The looseness of my piece is what caused the kickback. The spinning blade connecting with the wood that was probably only 1/4" away from the fence caused the wood to be sent right to the fence at high speed, then I suspect it bounced back at a higher level, then was caught by the blade again and propelled again into the fence. I was doing repetitive cuts, quite boring, and thought the cuts not demanding and the wood heavy enough so that I didn't bother to clamp the wood, but I was proved wrong.
