Troy Bilt Tiller, 5HP Briggs, running rough, black smoke from exhaust. Figured it was running rich.

This Briggs engine does not have the old, familiar, fuel mixture adjustment screw. There is nothing adjustable on the outside of the carb except the idle screw which is impossible to access without partial disassembly. Lots of linkages from carb to speed control, choke, and governor, so took step by step photos as I removed carb.
Once carb was off, removed cover from diaphragm pump, and found rubber worn through. Figure fuel was moving from pump chamber into carb, causing rich mixture. There is also a brass screw on one side of the carb that has a REALLY small hole in the end. It was clogged. I used a small wire to clean it out. Used spray carb cleaner to clean out all the passages, including the main jet which is not removable on this carb. The carb kit I purchased from eReplacements had all the gaskets I needed, plus the mixture screw and main jet which I did not. Next time I need to get into this carb, will save some $ by only buying gaskets I need. Tiller is now running like new!!

Had to remove all components related to the attachment of carburetor. Had to remove air filter cartridge assembly and gas tank assembly, also had to remove tension springs for the governor on motor. When done rebuilding the carburetor, had to reinstall everything in its correct order. I would suggest to take pictures as you disassemble as you go to put everything back to its correct place.

Following initial diagnosis: used a screwdriver to remove the in/out membrane valve cover located on the side of the carb (engine is a 5 hp B&S). Removed the valve membrane, cleaned the membrane area, situated the new membrane valve unit and reinstalled the membrane cover. Started the engine and operated it for a few minutes. Mission accomplished!
