We have researched the model number that you have provided and show the hex bearing flange above the steering pinion gear as part# 741-04542A, the pinion gear then slides into the service kit, and a flange nut, part# 712-04065 fits onto the end of the shaft as it goes through the service kit. 1. Removed fuel tank to access the steering column. (3/8 socket)
2. Removed worn pinion gear from the steering column (11/16 socket)
3. Pulled steering column out approximately 10 inches.
4. Inside the body of the tractor, where the steering column was pulled from, there is a loose laid hex nut. Over time, the hex nut became worn from the steering column rubbing against it. I rotated the hex nut which was worn in one area 180 degrees. This will make the steering column pinion gear mesh tighter into the steering sector gear as originally designed.
5. I replaced the steering column to its normal position and installed the new pinion gear.
6. This repaired the loss of steering condition on my lawn tractor.

Removed fuel tank, gear on bottom of shaft, steering wheel, slid out shaft. Reverse to install. I did put a brass bushing in the top by drilling out plastic. Used bushing that had a flange on it to keep it from falling down and out.

Removed the nut holding the steering (planet gear). Removed all parts holding steering rod and parts pertaining to the steering gear and the pedals for traveling and braking. Pulled pedals, unbolted pan/plate holding these parts, took off springs to pedals, other parts with cotter pins, dropped pan out and removed completely. Had to file where detent bolt fit (pentagon hole) and detent bolt had to be pushed back in, used a washer between nut and detent to take up space so detent nut would fit perfectly. Replaced all parts with new planet gear and new washer which took up slack from steering rod. Detent nut is a bushing also. Nut fits in a pentagon ( nut shape ) opening. Excessive whollering prevents nut going back into pentagon hole ( manufacturing flaw).

Removed the steering pinion gear. and pulled the steering wheel and shaft out of the gearing flange. I tapped the bearing flange hex out of the frame with a small hammer. Reverse order to reassemble.

1. Position mower up on lifts
2. Remove the cotter pins for both wheels
3. Remove the main nut
4. Remove the 2 plate nuts
5. Replace the steering pinion gear and steering rack plate
6. Reassemble

Removed rack and saw a chipped tooth. Ordered parts and added the pinion (steering gear) to be safe Gear had a worn spot and replaced it as well.
