Questions & Answers

The starter assist spring located under hub becomes twisted out of shape after several pulls on the starter rope. Once the assist spring is twisted the starter will not rewind. Installed new assist spring and the problem reoccurred after three pulls on the starter rope. Can this problem be fixed?
Frank for model number Poulan PP3516 AVX
Hi Frank and thank you for your inquiry. It doesn't sound like the spring is installed right or something is preventing it from staying in place. Copy and paste the link below into your web browser. It is a video from our site on how to install these springs. They can be quite tricky to do. This video is for a chainsaw but it's all the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BI9wrIVZpQ Good luck with your repair.

The hub Eps spring would bend out of shape and not allow the cord to recoil back in saw.
I removed 4 screws holding the housing and removed the housing from the saw, then removed the screw holding the old pull start assembly and removed it. I placed the new recoil spring in the housing and then the cord hub, the eps spring and outer retainer that engages the flywheel. I found that the screw holding the assembly to the flywheel was too short. When tightened it would not allow the string to recoil. I put a small washer under the shoulder of the screw which allowed me to tighten the assembly and also allowing the string to recoil. The washer was not included in the kit or mentioned in the instructions, so you have to improvise. I made it by cutting a wire termination end which turned out to be the right size on the inside and outside. I had been dealing with this issue for some time and Poulan customer service gave me no help in resolving it.

Chain saw starter recoil spring
Removed upper housing, then the side (starter) housing. Examined, and cleaned parts to see if dirt/debris was the cause of the problem (recoil starter rope would not retract into the housing). Determined the recoil starter spring needed replacing. Ordered the part. Watched internet video of the repair. Removed handle from starter rope. Installed the new recoil spring, being careful to slowly release the spring tension against the side of the spring housing. Pre-tensioned spring to determine the appropriate length of starter pull rope to be coiled around the spring/rope drum. Reassembled recoil starter, attached handle to starter rope, replaced side and upper housings. Checked starter operation for function, and appropriate retraction of the starter rope.
