30+ year old table saw @ a senior center; blade would gradually "drift" lower as it cut.

Table Saw

Time

1-2 hours

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, Wrench Set

The spacer that provided tension on the rack and pinion gear set used to raise the blade had mushroomed at both ends from use causing it to be about 1/16" shorter than it should have been. This caused "run out" (slack) in the gears which would manifest by the blade lowering itself during a cut. This is the 10" contractor saw; cast iron table and 54" fence. To fix this spacer you must disassemble the saw completely.
1. Unplug your saw and remove the blade.
2. Remove outfeed tables and add-on extension tables.
3. Remove the fence.
4. Remove the belt and motor (spring loaded pins). Remove switches & wires.
5. Separate the saw from the stand (legs).
6. Flip the saw upside down. Get some help! It is HEAVY.
7. Take several reference pictures with your phone before you begin disassembly.
8. Take the frame off the table (4 - 1/2" bolts)
9. Take the frame apart until you get to the angle pointer.
10 The spacer will go through a hole in the pointer.
11. If the spacer is mushroomed on both end as ours was, take it to the bench grinder.
12. Grind the mushroomed metal off one end of the spacer until you can remove it.
13. Install the new spacer and retrace steps 9-1
NOTE: This will be easier if you have been inside something like this before. If you are a newbie at this take pictures at each step as you disassemble so you don't get lost putting it back together.
