The belt retainer ring had worn down to nothing from continuous use and needed to be replaced.

    Tool Type

    Lawn Mower

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    Less than 15 minutes

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Socket set, Wrench Set, Nutdriver, Optional impact driver for blade removal and other tight nut

    1. Disconnect spark plug so the engine cannot accidentally start during repairs.
    2. Turn mower on its side, carburetor facing up, muffler facing down.
    3. Remove nut holding the blade on and the blade, brackets and washer and set aside in order of assembly.
    4. Remove plastic transaxle cover. There are 2 bolts on each side behind the rear wheels, 2 bolts on top between the rear of the engine and the flap the covers where the bag attaches to the mower, and 1 bolt under the bagger flap right underneath the bag discharge area near the sticker with the model number on it. Once those bolts are removed, slide the plastic shield off.
    5. Now you can remove the plastic shield that covers the blade brake mechanism. There are 2 bolts that hold this on right by the engine shaft. Also remove the circular metal shield in the middle that slides over the blade shaft.
    6. Next you will need to remove the 2 bolts that hold the blade brake clutch mechanism together. Slide the belt to the side, checking the belt for wear in the process and replacing if necessary. Remove the old blade retainer and replace with new.
    7. Reassembly is same as disassembly in reverse.
