1. Disconnected spark plug. Removed grass bag. Raised mower up on wooden 2x4s to access back wheels (did not tilt mower).
2. Removed left wheel with a socket set.
3. Removed ring clip with screw driver and needle nose pliers.
4. Removed pinion gear and thrust washer while holding down key on shaft. Quickly examined condi tion of key and didn\'t replace.
5. Replaced with new pinion gear, new thrust washer and new ring clip. Slid pinion gear on with L on outside (facing direction you would be standing to use mower), thrust washer and put on gloves to push ring clip onto shaft. The pinion gears have L and R engraved on them and are interchangeable.
6. Replaced old wheel with new wheel. Gears on old wheel were worn too. Used socket set to reinstall wheel.
7. Repeated for the right side.
8. Tested and self propelled worked. Although the left wheel would not move when I backed up. I had the tension too tight on the self propelled cable. Loosen nut near handle and eased back on the tension in the cable. Mower backs up and self propelled works like new. Mower is about 12-14 years old and is a Toro Personal Pace.

When we investigated the reason for the self-propel not working, we found numerous parts missing and the gear off the shaft. Replaced parts and reassembled and thankfully it is working like a charm. Just followed the parts diagram. And take your time.

First I removed the shoulder bolt with the impact wrench. Then removed the wheel. Removed the clip ring, then the thrust washer. I then removed the pinion gear just by pulling it off. Replace the old thrust washer, clip ring, and thrust washer. To assemble just reverse the order of the tear down.

Rear wheel drive pinion and gear on the wheel kept skipping.

Richard from North Haven, Maine

Difficulty Level:

Total Repair Time:

Tools:
Socket set, Wrench set
Removed the wheel and the pinion and bearing housing. Pressed the new bearing into the new bearing housing and then then pressed in the fiber sleeve into the bearing housing. Install the new bearing housing into the wheel bracket. Installed the pinion spacer washer and then the pinon gear. and installed the snap ring retainer.
Insta lled new wheel and axle bolt with the new spacer washer. Note: I had just installed a new pinion gear a few days before.
Works ok so far. No pinion gear jumping on the wheel gear. Suspect the bearing and the fiber sleeve for the drive shaft from the transmission was worn causing the skipping problem on my Toro personal pace mower.

1. Removed the rear wheel assemblies.
2. Removed the drive mechanism retaining c-clip on both rear wheels.
3. Removed the drive mechanisms.
4. Replaced the parts listed above and completed the repair on both rear wheels.

Note: Washer-Clutch and Ring-friction are the most common wear problems but, I replaced most everything since the mower was 7-yr old and still running very good.

I set the lawn mower up on blocks. Installed the spring, set the shafts key over the spring, slid the gear over top. Put the washer in place, used needle nose pliers to lock in the snap ring, put the tire on and used a 1/2\" socket to tighten up the tire. Very easy.

I\'m still working on this repair. Replacing the ball bearing and bearing retainer was simple. The biggest problem is removing the retaining ring clip to access bearing retainer. I bought a special tool to expand it. But it doesn\'t expand it wide enough and I really had to wrestle with it. Once I got it off, the bigger challenge was putt ing the new one back on after replacing the ball bearing and bearing retainer. The pliers don\'t expand it enough to get it back on. I\'m going to Northern tool to look for a better tool. The one I bought at an auto parts store simply doesn\'t open wide enough.
