Product Description

?

This is a Genuine OEM replacement part used on a variety of Lawn Mowers. This item is made out of Metal and it is Sold Individually. If either the ball bearing or the bearing retainer wear out this will cause the wheels have trouble turning. Ball bearings are used to reduce friction between rotating parts. The balls or rollers take the load and spin, distributing the weight evenly while the minimal contact area of the ball reduces friction. This reduces wear on the tool and allows it to run smoothly. Bearings experience constant wear when the tool is in operation from pressure, heat, vibration and friction. Because of this, many Bearings need periodic maintenance or replacement.

Rear wheel drive pinion and gear on the wheel kept skipping.

Richard from North Haven, Maine

A Bit Difficult
Total Repair Time:
30 - 60 mins
Tools:
Socket set, Wrench set
Removed the wheel and the pinion and bearing housing. Pressed the new bearing into the new bearing housing and then then pressed in the fiber sleeve into the bearing housing. Install the new bearing housing into the wheel bracket. Installed the pinion spacer washer and then the pinon gear. and installed the snap ring retainer.
Insta lled new wheel and axle bolt with the new spacer washer. Note: I had just installed a new pinion gear a few days before.
Works ok so far. No pinion gear jumping on the wheel gear. Suspect the bearing and the fiber sleeve for the drive shaft from the transmission was worn causing the skipping problem on my Toro personal pace mower.

You have to remove the drive gear and adjustment plate to get to the retainer bushing. Because it is probably rusted on, you will need to use a very large wrench or a vise and hammer if you do not have the right size wrench. After you get it part reassembly is very easy.

1. Remove plugg wire so engine can\'t start
2. Remove remains of drive belt. You have to remove a bracket umder the engine and on top of the transmission to do this. This involves removing 2 of the engine mount bolts. The bracket on the transmission uses Roberts bolts requiring a special driver. This will disconnect the control cable also.
3. Remove the drive wheels.
4. Remove the pinion gears. This requires a snap ring pliers.
5. Remove the axle bearing assemblie from the frame. The transmission will now fall out.
6. If new bearings are going to be installed, use a hammer and pu ch to drive the old bearings out.
7. Use a vise, press or hammer to press in the new bearings.
8. Hold the transmission in place and install the axle bearing assemblies.
9. Install the pinion gears.
10. Install the drive wheels.
11. Install the drive belt.
12. Install the bracket on the transmission.
13. Install the bracket under the engine to retain the belt.
14. Reconnect the plug wire.

I\'m still working on this repair. Replacing the ball bearing and bearing retainer was simple. The biggest problem is removing the retaining ring clip to access bearing retainer. I bought a special tool to expand it. But it doesn\'t expand it wide enough and I really had to wrestle with it. Once I got it off, the bigger challenge was putt ing the new one back on after replacing the ball bearing and bearing retainer. The pliers don\'t expand it enough to get it back on. I\'m going to Northern tool to look for a better tool. The one I bought at an auto parts store simply doesn\'t open wide enough.

Rear wheel dangling loose - replaced retainer bearing.

The repair consisted of replacing the retainer bearing.

Step one - assembled retainer bearing and bearing ball by hammering together. It slid together uneven at first, had to use some WD40 and gentle hammering (to not damage the pieces) to put together.

The toughest part was removing the cover panel that held the transmission rod that the bearing fit onto. That little panel holds a lot of parts together on the machine including the handle-bar assembly. Unscrewing it is easy but its a two person job to put it back together. It helped to take the starter rope pull off the handle part to make it easy to maneuver things back together.

It is key to have a tool to be able to reach the bolt that\'s furthest in (or up depending how you look at it)- again having two people helped. For reassembly, I held the nut and washer using a long adjustable type wrench that held the nut with the washer resting on top. My mom started the screw from the top. Once it caught a couple of turns it was all down hill.

Watched video on utube. Repair was not extremely difficult. They steps to change out transmission are to long for me to get into. Replaced ball bearing while I had it apart. Old transmission as well as the replacement have no way to check or add oil. If I had a way to add oil , in my opinion could have saved old transmission.
